John F. Wolfe Aquarium

What was announced?

The Columbus Zoo received a transformational gift from The Robert F. Wolfe and Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation that will support the future John F. Wolfe Aquarium, a new world-class, free-standing aquarium experience that will become a centerpiece of the Zoo's long-term vision for the future.

The facility will expand our ability to connect people with wildlife, inspire conservation action, and provide immersive aquatic experiences for guests of all ages.

Why is the Aquarium being named the John F. Wolfe Aquarium?

The John F. Wolfe Aquarium honors the Wolfe family's extraordinary generosity and nearly 100-year connection to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Their transformational $50 million gift—the largest philanthropic investment in the Zoo's history—will help bring this bold vision to life and create new opportunities to inspire future generations to care about wildlife and the natural world. Naming the Aquarium in John's honor celebrates a legacy of community leadership, philanthropy, and a deep commitment to the future of our region.

The Vision

Why are we building a new Aquarium?

Wolfe Aquarium supports our long-term vision to be a world-class destination for wildlife conservation, education, and unforgettable guest experiences.

The project will:

  • Expand opportunities for conservation education.
  • Introduce new aquatic species and habitats.
  • Enhance the guest experience.
  • Support economic growth and tourism in Central Ohio.
  • Create new opportunities for research, learning, and community engagement.

How will the Wolfe Aquarium support conservation?

Wolfe Aquarium is being developed with conservation, education, and animal wellbeing at its core. The project will provide new opportunities to engage guests in aquatic conservation issues and inspire action to protect wildlife and wild places.

Where will the new Aquarium be located?

The future John F. Wolfe Aquarium will be built on approximately seven acres within the northwest section of the parking lot near the Zoo’s main entrance. Additional site and design details will be shared as planning progresses.

The Experience

What animals will be featured in the Aquarium?

Wolfe Aquarium will feature more than 10,000 aquatic animals representing over 300 species from around the world. Guests will encounter a wide range of life—from native Ohio species like paddlefish and sturgeon to Amazon River animals such as arapaima, piranhas, and stingrays. Marine exhibits will include large sharks, rays, and colorful tropical fish, along with hands-on tidal pools. Specialized galleries will highlight unique species like jellies, seahorses, cuttlefish, and deep-sea creatures. Each exhibit is designed to showcase the diversity of aquatic life and inspire a deeper connection to conservation.

Will the animals in the Zoo’s current Aquarium be part of the new Wolfe Aquarium?

Yes, all the animals in the current Aquarium at Discovery Reef will call Wolfe Aquarium home.

Will the Aquarium be included in the Zoo admission price?

The John F. Wolfe Aquarium will be a separate ticketed attraction. This helps support the exceptional animal habitats, guest experiences, and conservation programs that will make the Aquarium a destination for generations to come. We look forward to sharing member and ticket information closer to opening.

Will Franklin County residents receive discounted admission to Wolfe Aquarium, similar to the discount they receive at the Zoo?

Franklin County residents receive a discount admission to the Columbus Zoo because for nearly 40 years Franklin County residents have supported the Zoo through a dedicated property tax levy. The levy dollars support the daily operations of the Columbus Zoo, including animal care and wellbeing, nutrition, facility maintenance, and education programs.

Because levy funding is dedicated to Zoo operations and not Wolfe Aquarium, Franklin County resident discounts will not apply to Aquarium admission.

We look forward to sharing member and ticket information closer to the Aquarium’s opening.

The Existing Aquarium

What will happen to the current Aquarium once Wolfe Aquarium opens?

There are a number of ideas being considered, but the focus right now is on planning and designing the future of the John F. Wolfe Aquarium.

As plans continue to take shape, we'll evaluate the best future use for the current Aquarium building and share updates along the way.
